Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I haven’t made anything in a long time and I feel nervous. What if I can’t do it?
A: First, it’s totally normal to feel worried that you won’t be able to do it. I feel like that all the time.
Second, this class is actually perfect for those who are feeling rusty or just plain stuck because the Creative Breakthroughs Technique is designed to help you work with and through those hard feelings, not wait until they don’t exist anymore.
The call-out approach guides and supports you, so you’re not flapping in the wind on your own while it continues to pull you forward–making it possible to ditch the self-censorship and the mean comments of your inner critic.
It’s not about making something perfect, it’s about the process, about getting yourself back to feeling good because you’re creating again.
You feel fulfilled and most like yourself when you’re creating. The major goal of this tele-class is to help make that happen more often.
And just remember, no one can see what you’re doing and you’re under no obligation to share what you’ve made. So it’s safe to give it a try. Yay!
Q: I’ve never made a collage before. Will I know what’s going on/understand what to do?
A: Great question. Yes, you’ll definitely understand what to do because I’m really good at describing what each technique “means” with lots of different ways to interpret them and concrete suggestions for how to apply them.
So the call-outs are me literally walking you through each step as we go. Everyone so far who’s never made a collage before had a blast. And since there’s no wrong way to make your collage, you can’t make a mistake.
Q: Is this class only for people who feel stuck?
A: Not at all. My favorite thing about this class is that it works for everyone–the complete novice, the person feeling stuck and unmotivated, and the very experienced.
Very experienced artists often use it as an opportunity to try something new or to play and let go of their usual approach.
Because the stakes are low and it’s not deadline driven or about your product line, it’s a great way to actually carve time out for this important aspect of keeping your creative juices alive and flowing.
If you make your living from your art, you know how hard it can be to just let yourself make anything you want, instead of what you know your customers want to see.
This class is your time for that.
Q: I’ve never been to art school or had any formal training, is that a problem?
A.: No problem at all. This class is a great way to get started! I’m very clear with my terms and it’s a safe place to get your feet wet.
Q: What if I hate what I make or it sucks?
A: I often hate what I make! And just yesterday I made two things that sucked.
Making things that “don’t work out” is an integral part of the creative experience. I actually want this class to help you get more comfortable with that. To make something great, you pretty much have to make stuff that isn’t so great. No one gets to skip that.
People who make artwork that you love just didn’t show you the artwork they made that sucked. But believe me, they made it.
What’s great about this class is that it gives you privacy, so you don’t have to feel like you’re making something that sucks in front of other people. And it’s yours, so you can do whatever you want with it, even if that means you throw it out.
Every time you make something “bad”, it just means you’re one step closer to making something “good”. So really, the sooner you get started, the better!
Q: What if I don’t finish my collage by the end?
A: I usually don’t finish my collages by the end of the class either.
The point of the class isn’t so much to create a finished artwork, it’s to help you get interesting work started in order to build and maintain a consistent creative momentum.
The classes help you begin a few pieces that you can then continue to work on and respond to later in the week (perfect for the 20 Minute Club btw).
Always having a work-in-progress to respond to is a million times easier than always having to start from scratch–especially in your time crunched life.
Taking this class every week is a great way to keep your creativity flowing.
Q: I’ve never taken a tele-class before, what if I try it and hate it?
A: You know, the first time I took a tele-class, I felt a little weird and unsure if I was doing it right. (In fact, I was afraid to make a sound because I thought everyone would hear me.)
But what I’ve found is that it’s a great, efficient way to learn something without having to leave the house or live near the teacher.
But if you do try it and are really disappointed for some reason, I have a 100% money back guarantee anyway, so just email me and I’ll return your money–no questions asked, no need to explain. (Really. It doesn’t help me to have you feel bad about the class in any way–I’d rather fix it!)
Q: I’m a Quilter/Beader/Felter/You Name it–could a collage class like this help me with my favorite medium?
A: Absolutely. I think of the class as a chance to explore and solve design problems–to think about all the formal aspects of making. Working in an atypical medium for you can be a fantastic way to breathe new life into your passion because it’ll awaken your brain to new possibilities.
Q: Is there a list of supplies we should have on hand?
A: Yes. You can view it and download a printable version here: http://makegreatstuff.com/suggested-supply-list/
